FinTech Voice, February 1, 2024

Hi Community,

Three key initiatives to kickstart the year!

  1. Our first event of the year, 'FinTech at Parliament House' in Canberra is just a week away.

  2. The 'Banking Reverse Pitch' launched today! ANZ and Westpac released problem statements on topics like sustainability, fraud & scams, and payments for startups to propose their solutions. We will also have the Banking Reverse Pitch Night on the 21st of February where the banks will pitch their statements live.

  3. Finnies applications open today! Get your applications ready and save the date for the biggest night in fintech - June 6, 2024. This time, in Sydney!

We also have a few other key initiatives planned such as 'FinTech for Net Zero'. We look forward to your participation and support

Kind regards,

Rehan D’Almeida,

General Manager,

Policy Update

FinTech at Parliament House

Next Wednesday we will host members and partners for our inaugural FinTech at Parliament House event in Canberra.

The evening serves as the launch for the ‘Parliamentary Friends of FinTech’ group, a non-partisan forum for parliamentarians co-chaired by Dr Daniel Mulino MP and Senator Andrew Bragg.

Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with parliamentarians and staff to showcase fintech's positive impact on the Australian economy and discuss current challenges facing the sector.

Payments licensing roundtable with Treasury

On Monday we held a roundtable Q&A session with Treasury's payments policy team to discuss the ongoing payments licensing framework consultation.

Members had the opportunity to put questions to the Treasury team about the proposed reforms. We are currently finalising our FinTech Australia submission which has been informed by a series of group discussions with members. If you have any late feedback to incorporate, please reach out.

We are currently working on the submission to:

  1. Scams - mandatory industry codes

  2. Payments System Modernisation (Regulation of Payment Service Providers)

We recently made submissions on:

  1. Regulating Digital Asset Platforms - Proposals Paper

  2. Reforms to the Payment Systems (Regulation) Act 1998 – Exposure draft legislation consultation

  3. Screen Scraping - Policy and Regulatory Implications

  4. CDR rules - Expansion to the non-bank lending sector

  5. CDR Consent Review and operational enhancements design papers

  6. ACCC Data Brokers Issues paper;

  7. Supporting Responsible AI: Discussion Paper;

  8. Licensing of payment service providers - payment functions;

  9. Reforms to the Payment Systems (Regulation) Act 1998;

  10. Modernising Australia's anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing consultation.

See our recent submissions on our website.

FinTech Australia regularly makes submissions to consultations across a wide range of policy and regulatory issues. Communications about how to get involved in these processes are distributed to our Policy Working Group membership.
